It was styled by Renault (probably Gaston Juchet) in the early ’70s; at least a dozen prototypes were made by IKA circa 1972-73, using Torino (AMC) chassis and mechanicals, though they were planning to put fuel injection on the litre six. But Yvon Lavaud, IKA’s boss since Renault’s takeover in ’67, died on Varig flight 820 in July ’73, which left IKA rudderless for a while. The R40 never did get off the ground, which explains why the Torino carried on for as long as it did.
